Learning Methodologies
Advanced Methodologies for an optimal learning experience
Web-based Self-Training (Mobile friendly)
The more traditional elearning methodology involving resources available online.
Self-training, or self-study takes place as the user views asynchronous content from their own device, defining their own pace.
Sometimes, content may be designed for mobile use, making learning even more flexible.
Microlearning
In microlearning, content is divided in smaller units of information, or “micro-lessons”, so they become faster and easier to take in, even along a busy schedule. This is ideal to refresh specific knowledge as well. Micro-content can be rearranged and combined by instructional designers in new learning path, to meet new requirements.
Gamification
Gamification is all about incorporating game-like elements into training, such as points, ranking and rewards.
This approach makes learning more engaging and motivates participants, improving their overall performance.
Game-based learning
Learning path that includes one or more games, not necessarily serious games but even actual commercial games, seen through the lens of education. Games are chosen for this methodology when their content can support training objectives and they can be integrated in the learning process. The gaming experience is used as a means to reflect upon newly acquired skills and knowledge.
Storytelling
Storytelling is a way of transfering concepts and information through stories. This can be done in eLearning by incorporating a narrative tone in content exposition, making it more compelling and fostering learning. Although it’s not a full-fledged methodology, storytelling is a technique often applied in teaching, since it can boost learner engagement and make complex notions more approachable.
Collaborative learning
Collaborative learning is a methodology for teaching and learning based on interaction and collaboration among learners.
Participants experience group activities and are encouraged to achieve shared goals, sharing informations and competences.
Working together to solve problems, discussing ideas and bringing projects to life, developing social and intellectual skills at the same time.
Flipped classroom
It’a teaching model that overturns the normal order of lesson and homework.
It is divided into two phases: at first students view educational content asynchronously (studying on a manual or watching video lessons), then the will participate in live encounters where they will put into practice what they have learned.
Social learning (from the theory of A. Bandura e R. Walters)
This methodology makes use of social interactions and communication networks to promote learning and competence development. Learning is more effective when people observe other’s behavior and results.
The social learning approach keeps this in mind and it is based on sharing examples of good behavior and direct experience. The tools utilized are similar to those of collaborative learning.

Training
Teaching methodologies
Over the years teaching methodologies have substantially changed: the combination of research in the pedagogical and psychological fields and the introduction of increasingly efficient and user friendly technology lead to a pivotal evolution of education.
Evolution of teaching methodologies
- Traditional training (up to the XIX century)
Frontal lessons in a classroom, the teacher is the main source of information. Focused on knowledge.
- Student focused training (second half of the XX century)
Emphasis on the student’s direct experience and collaboration. Focus on individual learning. (Montessori)
- Integration of technology into education (late 70s)
Computers as educational tools, customization of teaching.
- eLearning (90s-2000s)
Spreading of the first digital platforms, introduction of new teaching methodologies such as blended learning and flipped classroom.
- Mobile education and socials (2010s)
Appearance of smartphones and socials, introduction of mobile learning and social learning.
- Innovative methodologies (since 2010)
Appearance of new methodologies such as microlearning, gamification, game-based learning, storytelling, etc.
